for years, i’ve worked in the fragrance world, surrounded by scents. i love how a particular scent can bring back a memory, evoke a feeling, or remind you of a part of yourself that you have forgotten.

mind healings is a passion project. it is created to remind me (and us) to pause, breathe and play. we often forget to pause in this fast-moving world. we rush from one thing to another, and somewhere along the way, we stop noticing the little things: the scent of morning air, the sound of rain, the warmth of sun kiss on our skin.

my friends and family would often ask, “what are essential oils?” and i would usually take a long pause before answering. not because i do not have an answer, nor is it because it is too complicated to explain.

i honestly feel that the best reply would be for them to experience what essential oils are.

essential oil is an alternative therapy which is viewed unfavourably as some claims lack scientific findings to support its effectiveness. different users have different experiences with essential oils as there are varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the condition of the user. hence, users lack confidence in essential oils due to its variable effectiveness as compared to conventional medicine.

during my time spent in an Australian owned company, we have curated a wellness experience to share about the benefits of essential oils. the positive feedbacks received encouraged me to develop my passion in natural fragrances and mind healings.

this resource page is meant to support awareness, encourage mindful use, and deepen appreciation for essential oils and not to replace qualified medical care. always listen to your body, and seek professional guidance when needed.

photosensitive oils

some citrus oils may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight after topical application. avoid direct sun exposure at least 6-12hours after applying these oils to the skin.

photosensitive oils in this collection include all citrus essential oils. these oils are best used in evening blends or in products that will not be exposed to direct sunlight.

furry friends

especially cats, dogs and small pets, are more sensitive to essential oils. avoid diffusing oils continuously in enclosed spaces and ensure pets can leave the room if needed.

oils to use with extra caution around pets:

  • tea tree
  • eucalyptus
  • oregano
  • clove
  • thyme
  • lemongrass
  • citronella
  • peppermint

when using essential oils in a home with pets:

  • diffuse only in well-ventilated areas
  • avoid direct application on animals
  • allow pets access to fresh air and untreated spaces

pregnancy precautions

some essential oils may be too stimulating or strong during pregnancy. it is best to avoid the following oils unless advised by a qualified practitioner:

oils to avoid during pregnancy:

  • basil
  • clove
  • oregano
  • thyme
  • sage
  • wintergreen
  • anise
  • bay Leaf

gentler oils that are often considered safer in diluted amounts include:

  • lavender
  • chamomile
  • mandarin
  • neroli
  • sandalwood

always use essential oils in very low dilution during pregnancy (2-5%).

the first time i understood essential oil wasn’t from a book but from a whiff. when we open a bottle, we are meeting a very concentrated version of that life force.

essential oils are the aromatic essence of plants distilled or pressed from nature. they are what the plants use to protect themselves, communicate with their environment, and adapt to the world around them. It can be derived from different parts of a flower, leaf or bark.

most oils are released through steam distillation, where heat and water gently draw out the aromatic compounds. citrus oils, however, are usually cold-pressed from peels, capturing their bright, joyful energy.

essential oils work best close to us.  my favorite  techniques to enjoy the benefits of the oils includes..

through the breath, they meet the nervous system almost immediately.

through the skin, they work more slowly. a few drops, used intentionally, is enough.

inhaling slowly, diluting well, and paying attention to how your body responds will teach you more than any rulebook ever could. essential oils respond best to presence, not in excess

working with essential oils is less about doing and more about listening. listening to your body. listening to what changes when you slow down enough to notice.

because essential oils are highly concentrated, they should almost always be diluted when used topically. different carrier oils have different benefits, choose the oil that best fits your intended effect.

avocado oil - derived from the flesh of the fruit, it is rich, highly hydrating, with vitamins A and E, but can be very thick and rich for the skin to absorb.

coconut oil - a great general moisturiser and has a faint aroma of coconut that does not overpower.

grapeseed oil - light nourishing oil that comes from the seeds of grapes and hydrates the skin without leaving it greasy.

jojoba oil - thick and waxy that resembles our natural sebum more than other carrier oil, making it great for skincare purposes.

sunflower oil - a versatile oil that is more affordable. It is light, easily absorbed and nourishing on the skin because of it fatty acid and is rich in vitamins A, D and E.

when making topical essential oil preparations, the following dilution guidelines are commonly recommended in aromatherapy.

for infants and children, a 0.5% dilution equals 3 drops of essential oil per 30ml of carrier oil, while a 1% dilution equals 6 drops per 30ml.

for adults, a 5% dilution (30 drops) per 30ml of carrier oil, and a 10% dilution (60 drops) per 30ml.

for rollerball bottles, a 5% dilution uses 8 drops in a 5ml bottle or 15 drops in a 10ml bottle; and a 10% dilution uses 15 drops in a 5ml bottle or 30 drops in a 10ml bottle.

these ratios are general guidelines and should be adjusted according to the specific essential oil, intended use, and the age and sensitivity of the user.

blending essential oil

blending essential oils allows these aromatic qualities to work together, creating a more rounded and supportive experience. when thoughtfully combined, blends can be used to support different states of mind, physical awareness, and emotional or spiritual well being.

there are two common ways to approach fragrance blending with essential oils.

the first is through their aromatic and therapeutic properties (intentional blending), and the second is through pairing complementary or contrasting scents (art of scent).
